7 of The Most Common Residential HVAC Problems

Tools for AC

HVAC systems comprise many parts, both moving and stationary. In addition, they use fuel, refrigerants and other chemicals to function, which may pose a threat if anything is malfunctioning. Learn more about common home HVAC system issues you may face below.

1. Dirty Air Filters

A dirty filter can be the source of many HVAC issues, even ones you might’ve not considered. Dirty filters contribute to reduced operating efficiency, unusual smells and poor air quality within a home. Signs of a dirty air filter include a change in colour of the filter, higher utility bills and increased symptoms of allergies, coughs and other respiratory issues.

Cleaning or replacing your air filter will enhance your HVAC system’s efficiency and improve overall air quality.

2. Leaking Ducts

This may be a difficult issue to pinpoint, but leaky ducts can contribute to a whole host of HVAC problems. Air ducts that leak will cause your heating and cooling appliances to work harder, straining their components and potentially leading to a breakdown. Identifying a leak can be tricky, so be sure to contact a professional if you suspect leaking ductwork.

3. Broken Thermostat

It may be hard to tell if a broken thermostat is the root cause of your issues, but luckily, this issue isn’t too difficult or expensive to repair. First, try resetting your thermostat or changing its batteries if it uses them. If these steps do not work, it may be time to purchase a new thermostat. Consider getting a smart thermostat to increase your home’s efficiency.

4. Unusual Noises

Your HVAC system may normally be a source of noise, but any unusual banging or rattling should be investigated. Abnormal noises could indicate a failing motor, broken blower fan or airflow blockages.

5. Frozen Components

AC components are prone to freezing if something isn’t working right. For example, excess moisture, poor air circulation and sudden temperature shifts can cause parts to freeze up on your AC. The result? The unit emits only warm air or doesn’t start at all.

6. Troubles with the Ignition

This is one of the most common issues we see with furnaces. When an ignitor malfunctions, it won’t produce the spark necessary to start the combustion process. A faulty ignition can leave you without heat, and no one wants that in the middle of winter.

7. Infrequent Servicing

HVAC systems should be serviced at least once a year to keep everything in good working order. If you aren’t servicing your heating and cooling appliances annually, then you risk extensive and expensive repairs. In addition, regular maintenance ensures a cleaner system, improved air quality and increased energy efficiency.
