Keep Stale Air our of Your Home With HRV or ERV Air Cleaners

HRV or ERV air cleaners work as an essential part of your home’s HVAC system by expelling indoor air pollutants.

There are several contaminants that build up inside your home, and not taking the proper actions to get rid of these pollutants can lead to poor indoor air quality . In fact, the inside of a home is often more polluted than the outside, making it even more essential to ensure the air is kept as clean as possible.

HRV vs. ERV – The Two Different Types of Ventilator Air Cleaners

There are two separate kinds of whole home air cleaners: Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV) and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV). Both function to reduce indoor air pollution and keep air fresh.

HRV – Heat Recovery Ventilator

The HRV system is ideal for Toronto area homes where there is excess humidity during the heating season. The HRV keeps the home supplied with a steady flow of fresh outdoor air and helps to eliminate excess indoor humidity.  As stale, warm air is expelled, the HRV warms the incoming fresh, colder air before it is distributed throughout the home. The result is a constant supply of fresh air with no unpleasant drafts and greater home comfort.

The Greater Toronto area climate is relatively humid, even in the Wintertime, meaning that  HRV’s are usually the best choice for us. However, this is not always the case in every home.

ERV – Energy Recovery Ventilator

ERV’s are suitable for Toronto homes where there is NO excess humidity during the heating season.  The ERV recovers heat in the cold season, and also recovers the energy trapped in moisture, greatly improving the overall recovery efficiency. When it is more humid outside than inside, the ERV limits the amount of moisture coming into your home. In homes equipped with whole home humidifiers, when the humidity level is reversed, the ERV limits the amount of moisture expelled from your home.
